Yesterday's Budget put real numbers behind the AI promises. Some of them matter to your business. Most don't - yet.

    Confirmed in the Budget document:

    • £120 million for the AI Security Institute and £165 million for a National AI Biosecurity Initiative.

    • £154 million for cyber defences, plus £40 million for a new National Agentic Security Unit, to investigate and respond to "rogue agentic incidents". Yes, that is now a line in a UK Budget.

    • £140 million more for the Sovereign AI Unit, backing UK AI companies to scale here.

    • A new Data Centre Covenant, and an independent review of AI in the NHS.

For small businesses directly: a higher Small Business Rate Relief threshold - 70,000 more retail, hospitality and leisure firms paying no business rates at all - an extra 20% rates cut for pubs, music venues and social clubs, and almost £800 million a year off regulatory admin.

And on AI adoption itself: the Budget funds pilot local AI adoption partnerships, starting in West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, and York and North Yorkshire, building on Barnsley, the UK's first Tech Town - working across local councils to help small businesses grow and build skills.

Our read: the headline AI money builds national capability. The adoption help for small firms is real but pilot-scale and regional, not a national grant programme.

The two-minute habit: check whether the rate relief touches your premises. In one of the three pilot regions? Ask your combined authority what the AI partnership will offer.

The state is building the guardrails. Adoption starts local.

If you want to move from reading about AI to using it where it pays, we can help.
