Goldman Sachs commits $500m to small business AI

Wall Street just put a $500 million commitment behind small business AI.
Yesterday Goldman Sachs announced the Small Business AI Institute, partnering with Anthropic, Google, Meta and OpenAI to bring AI training and tools to small firms. Planned activities include an applied-AI learning series with Anthropic, Google's AI Professional certificate for nearly 20,000 business owners, and workshops with OpenAI.
The bank's own survey of over 2,400 graduates of its 10,000 Small Businesses programme shows why:
• 86% already use AI, up from 56% in 2024
• Only 15% say AI is fully integrated into their core operations
• More than three quarters want more training
That gap is the story. Using AI isn't the same as building it into the business.
The programme is American; nothing UK-specific has been announced. But the signal travels. When Goldman Sachs commits this heavily to AI for Main Street, it believes the demand is real.
Here's our take: the gap between using AI and running on it is where the next few years of small business advantage get decided, and the owners who close it early will be glad they did. You don't need a $500 million institute to start. You need one quiet afternoon.
